Shopify Product Images: Size, Format, and a Local Export Workflow

A Shopify product image has two jobs: show enough detail for a buyer to judge the item, and load without needless bytes. Prepare a copy for upload while keeping the camera original untouched. ImgMin can resize, convert, compress, and export that copy locally in your browser.

Start with Shopify’s actual limits

Shopify accepts product and collection images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, with each file under 20 MB. For square product photos, Shopify says 2048 × 2048 pixels usually displays best. These are platform specifications, not a rule that every photo must be square.

Use the same aspect ratio for a set of featured images so the collection grid looks consistent. A lifestyle photo can retain a different shape if the theme needs it. Shopify creates multiple display sizes and serves formats according to the visitor’s browser, so an upload format is not necessarily the format delivered to shoppers.

Choose the output before compressing

For a photographic image without transparency, try JPEG and inspect small text, texture, and edges after export. Keep PNG or WebP when transparent areas matter; verify the store theme and the finished listing before replacing an existing asset. Shopify’s accepted upload types are broader than these working choices.

Choose a dimension based on the source and the placement. Do not enlarge a small original to 2048 pixels merely to match a recommendation: upscaling cannot restore detail. Keep an untouched original so you can export again for another placement.

Make and check the file in ImgMin

Open ImgMin, add the source photo, set the desired width and height, and choose the output format. Use a target KB only when you have a concrete upload or performance budget. Process the image, then read the actual file size, pixel dimensions, and format shown in the result.

Zoom in on the product’s important detail. If the result is too soft, increase quality or relax the target KB; if dimensions are wrong, adjust the resize rule and process again. Download the verified copy and upload it to Shopify. ImgMin prepares the file; Shopify decides how the storefront displays it.

Keep a repeatable catalog rule

For a consistent set, save your ImgMin processing rule on this device and reuse it for the next batch. Check each exported image before it goes into the catalog: similar products can contain very different amounts of detail and need different compression. For mixed marketplaces, use batch workflow instead of forcing one specification on every channel.
