Etsy Listing Photos: Crop, Resolution, and Compression
On Etsy, the first photo shapes the listing thumbnail and affects how later images appear. The useful task is not “make every image tiny.” It is to preserve a clear product, leave space for the thumbnail crop, and export a file that uploads reliably.
Read Etsy’s guidance precisely
Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2000 pixels wide and high. It says the first photo should be at least 635 pixels wide and high to avoid appearing lower in search. Etsy also warns that files larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on slower connections. That warning is not a stated universal 1 MB hard upload limit.
Etsy advises starting with a horizontal or square first photo and leaving enough space around the product for different thumbnail crops. Its guidance says the first photo influences the shape of the rest of the listing. Check the live listing thumbnail instead of assuming a square crop always works.
Crop with the listing in mind
Keep the subject centered with comfortable space around the edges. If you need a new shape, use ImgMin to set dimensions and choose a crop that keeps the entire important product visible. Do not enlarge a small source just to pass a pixel recommendation: the resulting detail will still be limited by the original.
Before upload, inspect the first image at both full size and thumbnail size. Product edges, text, and texture should stay legible; important parts should not be cut off. Etsy may further optimize uploaded images for display, so check the finished listing.
Compress for a concrete upload problem
If an upload is slow or times out, try a smaller export from the original. For a regular product photo, JPEG is a sensible option; preserve transparency in a format that suits your image when needed. Use ImgMin’s optional target KB only when you have an actual file-size goal, and increase quality if visible detail suffers.
After processing, confirm the actual dimensions, format, and file size in ImgMin. Download the result, upload it to Etsy, and review the listing thumbnail. If Etsy changes the crop, adjust the framing and export again from the source image rather than repeatedly saving a compressed copy.
Keep platform outputs distinct
If you also sell on Amazon or Shopify, keep separate image rules and clear filenames for each destination. Their display and main-image policies differ. The batch workflow describes a simple way to reuse local rules without mixing platform outputs.
