Amazon Main Images: Compliance, Clarity, and File Preparation

An Amazon main image is the first listing image shown in search and on the product page. A smaller file does not help if the product is cropped, the background is wrong, or the result looks soft. Treat compliance and clarity as checks before you try to reduce bytes.

Separate image rules from compression advice

Amazon’s US Product image guide says the main image should show the real product in full, once, occupying about 85% of the frame, with a pure white RGB 255,255,255 background. It also restricts props, text, logos, and other visual claims on main images. Requirements can vary by category and marketplace, so check the applicable Seller Central guidance before uploading.

A white canvas alone does not make a noncompliant photo compliant: check framing, accessories, colors, and whether the photo accurately represents the item. ImgMin does not certify Amazon policy compliance and does not create a genuine white studio background from a complex scene.

Preserve zoom-worthy detail

Work from the highest-quality original available. Amazon’s image guidance says images with at least 1000 pixels on the longest side can enable zoom. Do not upscale a smaller picture to invent detail. Keep enough room around the item for the required full-product framing.

For a white-background photograph, JPEG is a practical first export. After compression, inspect edges, labels, fabric, and reflective areas at full size. If a target KB creates artifacts, loosen it; a small file is not a useful result when important product details disappear.

Export and inspect locally

Open ImgMin, select the prepared source, choose the intended dimensions and JPEG output, then process. Read ImgMin’s actual pixel dimensions, file size, and format instead of assuming the settings were met. Open or zoom the output to compare detail with the source.

Download the checked copy, then upload it through Seller Central and review Amazon’s own validation response. If Amazon rejects the image, fix the specific issue it reports. Keep the source untouched so you can export a corrected version without recompressing a prior JPEG.

Use a separate rule for secondary images

Main-image restrictions are stricter than those for other listing images. Save a local processing rule for repeatable main-image dimensions, but do not apply the same visual policy to lifestyle or detail images without checking their purpose. The cross-platform batch workflow explains how to keep outputs organized.
